Lake Atitlán Guide Plan my stay

Chapter 1 · Arrive

Welcome

Who we are, who this guide is for, and how to use it.

Welcome to Lake Atitlán. We live here, and Casa Kula, our retreat center in Tzununa, is in its tenth year.

We wrote this guide for the traveler we would have wanted to hand a map to when we first arrived: curious, a little spiritual, maybe a little tired, and unsure how much to plan.

What you will find

Practical notes on getting here and getting around, honest sketches of the villages, and some thoughts on culture, ceremony and safety. We kept it short and plain, because the lake does the heavy lifting.

What this guide is not

It is not a brochure and it is not a guarantee. Boats have no timetable. Prices drift. Trails change after the rains. We checked what we could, but please confirm anything that matters, especially fees, schedules and anything involving your safety.

How to use it

Read the chapters on getting here, getting around and safety before you travel. Dip into the rest as the lake calls you. If something is out of date, tell us and we will fix it.

Last checked October 2026. Fees, fares and hours change, so confirm anything that matters.
