Lake Atitlán Guide Plan my stay

Chapter 3 · Arrive

Getting here

From the airport or Antigua to the shore, in daylight and without rushing.

Most visitors fly into La Aurora International Airport (GUA) in Guatemala City and continue by road. There is no airport at the lake. The lake is about 3 to 4 hours from the airport by private car, and 4.5 to 6.5 hours by shared shuttle.

The short version

Option 1: shared shuttle from the airport

Several companies run shared minivans from La Aurora to Panajachel, including AtitlanTour, Atitrans, Guatemala Transportation and Adrenalina Tours. Fares in 2026 run about USD 32 to USD 40 per person.

Option 2: private transfer

A private car for up to three passengers costs about USD 185, and a minivan for up to six costs about USD 200 (2026 prices from Atitrans). The drive takes roughly 3 to 4 hours depending on traffic. It costs more for one or two people, but for four to six it is close to the price of a shuttle seat, and you leave on your own schedule. This is also the only practical option for an evening arrival, and operators will quote a time on request.

Option 3: stop in Antigua first

If you are also visiting Antigua, go there first and come to the lake after.

Shuttles that say "San Marcos" or "San Pedro" sometimes drop you in Panajachel and put you on a boat for the last stretch. Ask exactly where you will be dropped. If you are going to Tzununa, take a Panajachel shuttle and finish by boat (see the next chapter, Getting around).

Option 4: public buses

The cheapest way is by "chicken bus" (a retired school bus). From Antigua the route is Antigua, Chimaltenango, Los Encuentros, Sololá and Panajachel. It takes 2.5 to 4 hours, costs about Q30 to Q40 in total, and needs two or three changes. There is no direct bus from the airport. A bus company, Transportes Rebuli, runs from a bus terminal in Guatemala City, not from the airport, with early morning and early afternoon departures. Its fares and times are not published online. We do not recommend public buses straight after an international flight, or with luggage.

Taxis, ride-hailing and driving

Uber does not serve Panajachel, and finding a driver willing to make the one-way trip to the lake is not guaranteed. If you take a taxi from the airport, agree the fare before you get in and avoid negotiating with strangers in the arrivals hall. We do not recommend renting a car for the lake: the road down to Panajachel has switchbacks and seasonal fog.

Timing and safety

Travel by road in daylight only. Official advice for visitors is to reach lake hotels from Guatemala City during daylight hours, and we agree. Public boats stop running in the late afternoon, so plan to be in Panajachel by early afternoon if you still have a boat to catch.

We do not recommend a day trip to the lake from Antigua or Guatemala City. It is a lot of road for a few hours.

Leaving the lake

Shared shuttles leave Panajachel for the airport at roughly 5:00 am, 9:00 am, noon and 4:00 pm, for about USD 32 to USD 40. Leave a generous margin: the journey can take 4 to 6 hours, and airlines ask you to check in two to three hours ahead. If your flight is in the morning, sleep near the airport the night before.
