Each village has its own mood. We start on the north shore, where Casa Kula sits.
Panajachel
The largest town and the lake's transport hub, with banks, ATMs, markets and the busy shopping street Calle Santander. It is the most "ordinary" town on the lake: useful and lively, and less quiet than the others. Most people pass through; some enjoy a day here. Reserva Natural Atitlán is just outside town (see Hikes and views).
Santa Cruz La Laguna
A steep, traffic-free village, with hotels at the waterfront and the traditional village up the hill. It is known for diving, kayaking and paddleboarding, and for calm water in the morning. You reach it by boat or on foot.
Jaibalito
One of the quietest villages: no road in, a few small restaurants, and Kaqchikel spoken before Spanish. It is a 20 to 30 minute walk to Santa Cruz and one to one and a half hours to Tzununa.
Tzununa
A small village in a green valley between Jaibalito and San Marcos, with a public dock, small cafés, farms, yoga studios and quiet paths. Its name is often said to mean hummingbird. A waterfall hike with a local guide starts nearby (see Hikes and views). This is our home, so we are biased, but we think it is a good place to slow down.
